What Is Wellness, Really? Dr. Raj Kalra on Rebuilding the Memory Care Model from Scratch

Senior Living Innovation Forum Presentation by Dr. Raj Kalra

Dr. Raj Kalra was a featured presenter at the Spring Senior Living Innovation Forum (SLIF), held June 6–8, 2027.

His presentation, “What Is Wellness, Really?”, explored what it means to rebuild the traditional memory care model from the ground up—placing true wellness, quality of life, and evidence-based care at the center.

“Wellness is not just about helping people survive. It’s about helping people live.”

During the presentation, Dr. Kalra shared the deeply personal journey that ultimately led to the creation of Aroha Memory Care. From witnessing the challenges of aging within his own family during COVID, to supporting his mother through an aggressive oral cancer diagnosis, his family’s experiences as caregivers helped reshape his perspective on what senior care could and should be.

After 16 years as Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at a major healthcare organization, Dr. Kalra set out to create a different approach to memory care.

The result is Aroha Memory Care, a physician-owned and operated community built around five integrated pillars:

  • Evidence-based medicine
  • Evidence-based dentistry, including the often-overlooked connection between oral health and systemic conditions such as aspiration pneumonia
  • Evidence-based design, including floor-to-ceiling windows and adaptive circadian lighting
  • Evidence-based technology
  • Evidence-based caregiving

Together, these principles form a memory care model designed not simply around managing disease, but around helping residents live with greater purpose, wellness, dignity, and quality of life.
