Design for Life: A Day with Purpose, The Art and Science of Person-Centered Engagement at Aroha Memory Care
At Aroha Memory Care, our Community Member’s every day experience has been carefully designed to nurture the mind, body, and spirit. Grounded in evidence-based principles of cognitive and physical exercise and strengthening, and meaningful, purposeful activity, our daily flow is more than a schedule—it’s a therapeutic rhythm that supports function, joy, and self-esteem throughout the day.
People living with dementia thrive when their days are purposeful, predictable, and filled with opportunities for connection and relationship. Drawing on research from cognitive rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and dementia engagement studies, Aroha’s daily structure follows a well-honed flow for the day. In the morning, we take advantage of maximum brain power and body energy and feature programs that provide mental and physical workouts. In the afternoon, as frustration and fatigue can be an issue, we will focus on creativity, productivity and social connection. And as the day closes in the evening, engagement that fosters relaxation, reflection, and restoration will be offered.
By mirroring natural human energy patterns, this rhythm preserves remaining skills by matching engagement types to times of optimal alertness and function. Let’s take you through a typical day:
Morning:
Awakening Mind and Body
The day begins gently with breakfast made-to-order or at-will, promoting natural wake times and personal preference—empowering Community Members to begin their mornings on their own terms.
After breakfast comes exercising, walking, or stretching, light physical activity proven to boost mood, balance, and cognitive performance. These moments energize the brain and prepare the body for the morning’s mental stimulation.
Next, a coffee or tea break transitions into relaxed conversation or lunch planning, where Community Members engage in natural decision-making. Reading the newspaper or sharing and discussing a “Daily Wisdom” invites cognitive engagement, and social togetherness.
Think Tank Time—Cognitive Workout
The heart of Aroha’s morning programming is Think Tank Time, a rotating series of themed, small-group sessions built around the pillars of cognitive stimulation and lifelong learning. Learning new things, exercising both long and short-term memory, using problem-solving skills, and connecting with others are woven into the weekly challenges. These sessions are graded to meet each Community Member’s abilities while gently challenging executive functioning, communication, and memory.
Afternoon:
Productivity, Mastery, and Creative Flow
After lunch and a restful regroup, the afternoon shifts to purposeful productivity and a time to move, create, and contribute. Working in the gardens, on an art project, or completing household tasks that nurture a sense of mastery and purpose while supporting procedural and executive functioning skills.
An afternoon hydration and snack break follows, featuring snacks and beverages planned and, in some cases, made by the Community Members reinforcing autonomy and routine.
Connection, Comfort, and Reflection
As the afternoon winds down, Community Members can enjoy leisure pursuits, such as entertainment by a visiting artist, music and memory sessions with personalized playlists or small-group sing-alongs. Gentle dance and movement for those with late-day restlessness and relaxed viewing with ZinniaTV or creative reflection through crafts and scrapbooks can all help with decreasing late-day agitation.
Evening:
Dinner is followed by a time for reflection and activities designed to calmly close the day, offerings such as meditation, spiritual readings, journaling, or restorative stretching. And finally, a comforting nighttime snack with herbal tea, milk, or a light protein treat that supports good sleep hygiene and a sense of peace.
The Aroha Way: Evidence, Heart, and Rhythm
At Aroha, we believe every moment can contribute to wellness when it’s designed with intention.
